Maple Heights: Raymond Elementary teachers excited over Watch D.O.G.S.

    by Sun News
    Wednesday November 19, 2008, 4:19 PM

MAPLE HTS. - Teachers at Raymond Elementary School are "excited" that fathers of kindergartners and first-graders who attend the school will be actively involved in a formal group called Watch D.O.G.S.

The program is designed so that fathers positively influence children.

The inaugural meeting of the local version of the national group drew 68 fathers on Nov. 13, Principal Tara Scott said.

The program calls for fathers to be at the school when pupils arrive and leave, during lunch, on field trips and help as tutors for mathematics and reading.

School board member Michael White said Watch D.O.G.S. has "so much potential for the good of the kids in the city."

The acronym D.O.G.S. stands for dads of great students.

Watch D.O.G.S. is program of the National Center for Fathering. Its goals include raising "the banner of positive fathering," providing every student with a father figure and to "awaken" fathers to the values of committed fathering.

The program here is a pilot that could be expanded, Superintendent Charles Keenan said.

Fathers named on the Raymond leadership team are Bobby Williams Sr., Brian Green, Derrick Kendall and Walt Williams.

The group is to meet once a month at the school.

Maple Heights: City chooses pool contractor

    by Ken Baka
    Friday November 14, 2008, 4:34 PM

MAPLE HTS. - For its new pool at Stafford Park, the city chose to hire a company that built pools at Bedford, Rocky River, Lyndhurst, Bay Village and Seven Hills.

Winning contractor Astro Pool Co., Mansfield, in a venture with Brandstetter-Carroll Inc., a Cleveland engineering firm, agreed to build a pool of 5,870 square feet, containing five lap lanes with the depth being 5 feet.

The price is to be $1.3 million.

Whether the pool here is to have extra features remains to be seen.

The public will get a chance to weigh in with comments after a committee of council further discusses aspects of the pool, Council President Jackie Albers said.

Maple Heights: Stafford well won't be drilled this year

    by Sun News
    Wednesday November 12, 2008, 2:48 PM

MAPLE HTS. - A natural gas well at Stafford Park won't be drilled this year, a company official said.

Gene Cardi, owner of Blue Rock Land Co., said the lack of an easement of land under which Blue Rock would install pipes to connect with Dominion East Ohio Gas Co. has held up drilling.

Drilling was to have begun by now.

Under present conditions, drilling could likely begin in March, he said.

The sought-after easement is for land owned by private landowners.

Also not obtained is a state-issued license to drill, he said. Getting the license could take 35 days, Cardi said.

Under an agreement with the city, the well is to share revenues from the sale of natural gas or oil with the city.

Two of three wells recently drilled in Garfield Heights produced no oil or gas, Cardi said. The successful well is located on land under control of Ray Schloss, former owner of Schloss Paving Co., he said.
